I like how you have the stark contrast between the students. Sage seems very mature at eight, very willful and knows what she wants. But the first time she's seen around the other people her age, they seem so much more childish in comparison. Even at 14 she seems wise beyond her years. It's also very sad that homophobia still exists in the future 
I love how the narrator is just relaying the events of the past. All the emotion and personality comes from the humans of the story. It's very cool to have the unbiased narrator just filing away information and memories.
Just a small side note, a little more than halfway down there's some random 0s in the text. " Gripping Kirsten’s arms, Sage shook her gently. “Please stop this,” she begged, her words barely distinguishable through her tears. “Please just wake up and be alright.”0000 "
